Jagmeet Singh, the current leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, has had a long and eventful journey to his current position. Born in Scarborough, Ontario in 1979, Singh grew up in a household that valued education and social justice. His parents, who immigrated from India in the 1970s, instilled in him a strong sense of justice and community involvement.
Singh’s interest in politics was sparked at a young age, as he witnessed the inequality and discrimination faced by minorities in Canada. After earning a degree in biology from the University of Western Ontario, he went on to obtain a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School. As a practicing lawyer, Singh took on cases that focused on human rights and social justice, fighting for the rights of marginalized communities.
In 2011, Singh entered the world of politics when he was elected as a member of the Ontario Provincial Parliament, becoming the first turbaned Sikh to be elected to a provincial legislature in Canada. During his time in office, he advocated for issues such as affordable housing, workers’ rights, and environmental protection.
